Who we are & what we do

Canada Lands Company (CLC) is a self-financing federal Crown corporation specializing in real estate, development, and attractions management. For nearly 30 years, Canada Lands has led some of the most sought-after real estate developments across the country while overseeing attractions operations in a financially self-sustaining manner. With a goal to enhance communities and maximize contributions to Canadians.

The Company owns over 200 hectares (500 acres) of lands in Downsview which includes the following:

Downsview Park, which include the lands that encompass the Framework Plan and lands that include educational, recreational and commercial uses. Downsview Park will remain the heart of this area and will not be developed.
Arbo Downsview, a mixed-use development that will include affordable housing, commercial and retail spaces, a preserved heritage woodlot and other amenities to foster a strong feeling of community.
Downsview East, part of the Chesswood District; will also be developed to include housing options, community facilities, and repurposed heritage buildings.
Allen Lands, a portion of the lands will be part of the Downsview East District’s mixed-use development that will create new jobs and housing opportunities for the community.

Social Impact: Canada Lands Company prides itself on its social impacts in communities – including efforts to enable affordable housing and historic Indigenous partnerships cultivated over many years. Canada Lands has also been recognized as Rainbow Registered by Canada’s 2SLGBTQI+ Chamber of Commerce (CGLCC) following many efforts to support 2SLGBTQI+ community allyship. Canada Lands seeks to broaden the diversity of engagements providing space for different viewpoints.
Environmental Sustainability: Another important consideration is environmental sustainability, as Canada Lands works towards achieving net-zero carbon emissions, reducing energy and water consumption, and meeting other environmental goals. The Company’s sustainability objectives aim to address climate change by promoting initiatives and biodiversity. Financial Resilience: As a self-financing federal Crown corporation, Canada Lands operates without government funding. It strategically manages assets, employs innovative revenue generation strategies, and aims to maximize both financial and non-financial returns to Canadians.

Indigenous Partnerships

Canada Lands Company acknowledges that Downsview West is found on the traditional territory of many nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples and is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. Canada Lands also acknowledges that Toronto is covered by Treaty 13 signed with the Mississaugas of the Credit, and the Williams Treaties signed with multiple Mississaugas and Chippewa bands.

We're proud to have long-standing and precedent-setting partnerships with Indigenous communities across Canada as a vehicle to address Indigenous peoples' interest in the disposal of surplus federal property. Canada Lands currently has six Indigenous partnerships across the country including:

Two developments in Vancouver with the Musqueam Indian Band, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations.
One development in Winnipeg with the Treaty One First Nation: Brokenhead Ojibway, Long Plain, Peguis, Roseau River Anishinaabe, Sagkeeng, Sandy Bay, Swan Lake.
Two developments in Ottawa with the Algonquins of Ontario.
One development in Halifax with the Millbrook First
